Kyudojo Frankfurt am Main e.V. is one of the largest and most active Kyudo clubs in Germany. Since its founding in the 1980s the club has been devoted to promoting traditional Japanese archery, Kyudo. With around 110 members and regular seminars at state, national and international level, it makes a major contribution to spreading this centuries-old Budō art in Europe.
For optimal practice, the club built a hall of its own, a dojo, designed according to classical Japanese principles. The open architecture connects interior and exterior, creates an atmosphere of concentration and makes the dojo an island of calm in the middle of modern city life.
The hall itself is an architectural masterpiece in timber. Its structure is based on a wide-spanning arch that makes the 18-metre front opening possible. Oversized Japanese arches shape the façade, both aesthetically and functionally, by providing shelter from sun and rain. In winter, ten shoji-inspired sliding doors with integrated windows provide a suitable room climate.
The dojo was optimised with parametric 3D planning in cooperation with Bollinger+Grohmann Ingenieure. The timber construction was realised through precise digital fabrication at Holzbau Amann, so that material efficiency and structural requirements were perfectly matched. After prefabrication, the elements were erected by club members together with Zöller Transport GmbH in just four days.
Today the dojo is a meeting place for Kyudo practitioners from all over the world, a space in which tradition, architecture and precision merge in harmony.
