Symphony T(h)ree
Between form and perception – visual compositions in space
Multiple exposures and depth turn the forms of trees into abstract patterns. Between reality and dissolution, a visual space for new perspectives emerges.
About the series
The series Symphony T(h)ree is a photographic exploration of the fine structure of tree branches and the last remaining foliage in the autumn dusk. Made with an analogue 6×17 panoramic camera, the works consist of complete, uncut strips of 120 film (6 × 80 cm). As prints, the panoramas measure 285 × 20 cm.
Through deliberate, manual multiple exposures and rotations of the film transport, complex visual layers build up on a single negative. This is not classic depth-of-field photography but a poetic abstraction: lines, density and light interweave into a polyphonic web of forms. The photographs were made exclusively during the blue hour – an in-between moment in which clarity dissolves and silence condenses.
Like a musical composition, the images unfold as you move along the long strips: intensities shift, rhythms change, structures emerge and vanish again. This linear movement through the image creates a temporal experience in space – much like listening to a symphony.
Hence the title of the series: Symphony T(h)ree – a play on words that alludes both to a three-part musical form (Symphony Three) and to the English “tree”, the central motif. The three works bear the musical tempo markings Andante, Allegro and Presto – visual movements of a spatial score.
